High-Speed Memory Cards, Fashionable or Functional?

Are these new High-speed cards merely the latest fad, or do they actually have more functionality?  Read on to find out more.

High-speed memory cards can take pictures more quickly because they can recall and store pictures more quickly than standard cards. High-speed cards will help your camera take pictures more quickly by clearing the buffer out faster. They will allow you to send your pictures to your local photo lab for printing more quickly. More importantly, the High-speed memory cards will transfer pictures to your computer much faster, especially when using FireWire (especially FireWire 800 as opposed to the older FireWire 400) or USB 2.0. You can transfer pictures in a fraction of the time and get out there to take more!

Believe it or not, high-speed cards can improve the quality of the movies that you take with your digicam. The faster read/write speed allows the camera to avoid skipping and losing pieces of your movie clips. In fact, most digital video cameras that use memory cards recommend a minimum sustained read/writes speed of 6mb per second. With the high quality movie clips available on the tiny cameras, you may find yourself taking more movies than pictures. They also have the ability to work in extreme weather. In Michigan, we encounter extreme cold and hot--sometimes in the same day!

So who can benefit from High-speed memory cards? Just about everyone. The outdoor photographer braving the cold for the perfect landscape shot. The dedicated Uncle getting ready for the next little league game. The professional who needs to be ready to take the perfect shot at a moments notice. And the new parents making a movie clip of their little one' s first steps to e-mail off to Grandma.

With so many different memory cards available, how does someone sort through all of them? SD, xD, CF, Smart Media, Memory Stick? Each camera takes its own specific type of memory card, your camera's owner's manual will tell you whcih one.  Once you know that, the rest is easy.

PS. If you want to see if your camera is compatible with the new SDHC format for SD cards with a capacity of more than 2GB, click HERE.
